ABSTRACT
This research aims at studying the leadership qualities of Ibn Taymiyyah, particularly focusing on his paradigm on da’wah al-amr bi al-ma’ruf wa la-nahy ‘an al-munkar, from both theoretical and practical perspectives.
The main objectives of this research are: (1) to recognize Ibn Taymiyyah in a deeper sense (2) to explain the concept of da’wah al-amr bi al-ma’ruf wa la-nahy ‘an al-munkar postulated by Ibn Taymiyyah, and (3) to identify its impacts on the concept of da’wah al-amr bi al-ma’ruf wa la-nahy ‘an al-munkar employed by Ahmad Dahlan in the Muhammadiyah Organisation in Indonesia.
In this very study, the researcher conducted both library research and field work. As to analyse the data, descriptive qualitative approach was employed, specifically using both inductive and deductive methods as well as content analysis technique.
From the findings of the study, the researcher concludes that: (1) Ibn Taymiyyah is a scholar who has the theoretical expertise in da’wah al-amr bi al-ma’ruf wa la-nahy ‘an al-munkar, (2) Ibn Taymiyyah is also a scholar who consistently applies the concept of da’wah al-amr bi al-ma’ruf wa la-nahy ‘an al-munkar as how it appears in his writings, (3) Ibn Taymiyyah is found to be a scholar who is loving, tender, patient, generous and caring towards others regardless of the beliefs the people hold, (4) Ibn Taymiyyah is a scholar who respects leaders even though he finds the leader a person who still needs to be advised, for he believes that it is a part of the obligations in implementing da’wah al-amr bi al- ma’ruf wa la-nahy ‘an al-munkar, (5) In practicing da’wah al-amr bi al-ma’ruf wa la-nahy ‘an al-munkar, Ibn Taymiyyah (a) directly involves in the Da’wah al-amr bi al-ma’ruf wa la-nahy ‘an al-munkar, (b) writes books to portray his objection over the developing school of thought which he believes to be conflicting with the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah, and (c) practically engages in jihad, as proven when he becomes the comando in a war against the Tartar military.
Besides, this research also attempts to identify the impacts Ibn Taymiyyah have on Ahmad Dahlan in practicing da’wah al-amr bi al-ma’ruf wa la-nahy ‘an al-munkar in the Muhammadiyah Organisation in Indonesia. The results indicate that Ahmad Dahlan is a scholar who has earlier recognised the school of thought brought by Ibn Taymiyyah, specifically during his studies in Mecca. This is proven when ahmad Dahlan: (1) executes his obligation in implementing al-amr bi al-ma’ruf wa la-nahy ‘an al-munkar right after performing hajj and studies in Mecca, (2) uses the book of Tauhid al-Washitiyah Ibn Taymiyyah as the main source of reference in the area of aqidah, which is still being used up until today, (3) carries out various activities throughout practicing the concept of da’wah al-amr bi al-ma’ruf wa la-nahy ‘an al-munkar.
